My experience with cloth diapers and travelling has been great. The fact that I had access to a washer and dryer was an advantage. I recently went to visit my sister who got married earlier this year. The plane ride was smooth and no I had to problems as I used my most reliable diaper for the journey. My only complaint will be the small baby changing facility in the plane.
In the diaper bag, I opted for a hybrid system as I had enough room to put pre-folds, two shells, a change of clothes and lots of toys. I did not travel with a full stash as it would have been too bulky but it gave me an excuse to add two more hybrids to the collection. I followed the same washing routine as back home so everything went smoothly. I cannot say the same for our trip abroad where we encounter a few difficulties. My husband managed to get us an apartment with a washing machine but not a dryer and that’s where it all went downhill.
We were expecting blue skies, hot and sunny days during our vacation; instead we got rain the whole time. With no sun on sight, our pre-folds were taking a long time to dry and a butt naked baby was on the loose. Being a smart mommy, I packed a handful of organic cotton disposable diapers and that save our short lived sightseeing trips. While the pre-folds were drying, the disposable diapers were used and when we were in the apartment we used cloth (if dried). Although you cannot take a dryer with you on vacation, prepare for the unexpected.
